How Archivio is made
"Archivio" is an ever-growing publication and archive curated by Habitat's current and past residents. It is built with MediaWiki, a wiki software that allows the creations of hypertext publications collaboratively edited and managed by its own audience, directly using a web browser.
MediaWiki is free server-based software licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL), that uses PHP language to process and display data stored in a database (in our case locally installed at Cà de Monti, Tredozio).
All the residents, by having their own Account, become the active part of the archiving process, with the possibility to upload, edit and publish content and processes coming from personal and collective residential experiences.
Archiving Protocols
File Formats
Encoding standards that allow computers to store and access information as different types of media so it can be rendered by software.
For this archive, please consider:
- Images:
.jpg
,.jpeg,
,.png
- Videos:
.mp4
. There will be a special upload page for uploading videos and larger files.
Videos can be also archived by using a frames extractor.
The hidden value behind the Compression
Some file formats use compression algorithms to make file sizes more efficient by eliminating data that the algorithm considers redundant. Depending on the type of compression, this may result in a permanent reduction in quality for the content of the file.
Please, consider to upload your files as much lighter as possible, without compromising effectively the look. The current size limit for the upload is 5mb.
Compressor is a tool to be included*
Filename
We consider descriptive file names as an important part of organizing, sharing, and keeping track of data files. For that reason, you can refer to this specific section to know how to name your file, before or during the upload. Our naming convention is based on elements that are important to the project.
- Start with the date – "DD-MM-YYYY" format, for example: Nov. 7, 2019, is "07-11-2019"
- Add the Author of the file – --name-surname--
- Add the Title of the file – --title-- or --title-with-more-words--
If it's a picture:
- Start with the date – "DD-MM-YYYY" format, for example: Nov. 7, 2019, is "07-11-2019"
- Add the Author of the file –
--name-surname--
- Add the Title of the file (if there's one) –
--title--
or--title-with-more-words--
- Add the Location of the picture
- and/or Add the subject of the picture
Important:
- Use only the dash - to divide sections.
- Avoid special characters, such as: ^ ~ \ / : * ? " < > | ! # % & $ , .
These symbols can indicate specific commands and may cause problems when transferring your files.
- Don't put spaces in file names.
Divide the words with one bash -
and the sections with a double bash --
